There are a number of standards that are applicable to businesses in the UK.
As a useful resource these are listed below with a brief description of the circumstances in which they are apply.
- BS 6700: Specification for design, installation, testing and maintenance of services supplying water for domestic use within buildings and their curtilages.

- BS 2486 :1997: gives recommendations for the control of water-side conditions of steam boilers and water heaters and also for the preparation of feed water for such plant. The following categories of water heating or steam-raising plant are covered:
- hot water systems
- electrode boilers
- shell (fire-tube) boilers operating at pressures up to 30 bar
- water-tube boilers operating up to critical pressure
- once-through boilers, including “coil” and “hairpin” types, operating up to, or above, the critical pressure
- BS 7593: 2006: Deals with the potential problems, and the remedies required to maintain efficiency and maximize the life of hot water central heating systems. The standard also gives guidance on the preparation of the primary circuit of wet central heating systems prior to initial commissioning or re-commissioning following major remedial work (e.g. boiler replacement) and ongoing water treatment to ensure continued efficiency in operation.
